When I was ready to do something else, I didn't know where to start. It seemed that every bit of life in Footscray was exciting and made me want to document it. The subject matter was a little difficult to decide on, and the creative process didn't go as planned. I prepared some fabric, photos and a video to place in the Footscray Community Arts' display space, with a workbench and wall, and, well, a piece of paper. "Can you talk about how you feel about the community and the environment?" This was the question left on the paper. There was no agenda, and I just wanted to start the conversation first.
As a new resident, I wanted to avoid the labels first, to get a sense of other people's perceptions and memories, and to learn the perspective they were all describing. As Suzi Gablik says, the process of dialogue itself can transform the worldview of self-assured individualism and self-sufficiency, because when individual consciousness breaks through the limits of one's preconceptions and expectations, it spreads more freely in many different directions. Food, biodiversity, the weather and greeting each other were among the things we talked about most.
