Finding a place to settle

Wandering around Melbourne started with finding and renting a townhouse. Finding a stable place to live went less smoothly than I thought it would. We had just returned from overseas and therefore were turned down by several agents for viewings. We were also turned down for rentals because, as students, we didn't have stable jobs. We had to spend much time trying to find a place to live. Wearing masks, disinfecting, packing food and hanging out became our daily routine for the first two weeks.

One breezy morning, after breakfast, we went out of our temporary apartment to view the new house, birds such as crows and sparrows cawed in the trees as they announced a new day. Seeing there was no one around on the road, we all took off our masks and took a big breath of fresh air. Suddenly, around the corner of the junction ahead, a lady was walking in our direction with her dog. Just as we were hesitating to put up our masks, she looked over at us and smiled and said, "Morning". All of a sudden, I felt completely relaxed, free from my mechanical self; the community became pleasant when it strips its self from the narrative of the pandemic. I wandered along the way, admiring other people's yards and plants. After a while, the birds flew low, and the sky was covered with a layer of shadow, fine rain drizzled from the sky.
